The Mother Of All Patches - Or, Perhaps, The Begining Of The End

OK, that title came off kind of overly-dramatic. But let me show, the problem & the solution, and then I will tell:

I almost feel weirdly guilty about this ... usually, I'm using a patch for a small tear that would in all likelihood grow out on it's own if it didn't get caught on everything. The patch keeps it together, keeps it from snagging on all sorts of things. This patch ... is holding together something that would never survive on it's own.

I did this at work this morning around 9:00, I'm not sure exactly when but I think when I was out in the warehouse moving around boxes (I am in charge, for some reason, of record retention, rather against my will). I globbed on some of the clear polish I keep in my desk drawer (NOT, unfortunately, Seche) which I put both on top & under the nail - it was my only hope of getting this nail to survive not only the workday, but the trip to grandma's afterward. I tried not to get my hopes up, but somehow I managed not only to function for nearly 12 hours without losing it, but to successfully remove the existing patch without finishing off the break!

Still, all things considered, I'm not sure how long this can possibly last. So if & when it does break the rest of the way, I am telling myself I'll cut the rest down & start from scratch. Which I am not looking forward to (obviously ... look at what I am willing to do to keep my long nails =) )... so I will be taking very good care of this patch LOL until then.

Thanks for reading.

  1. it would be such a shame to get rid of your long nails :(
I love long nails but I can't grow mine: when my nails get just a little too long, I am totally incapable of doing such things as typing and I'm afaid of poking my son in the eye or something, I am such a klutz!

  2. Oh! I'm so sorry you are going through this.

I had a similar break on my thumb. It held together with a piece of teabag and brush on glue for a good six weeks. I had to replace the patch every 4-7 days.

For one nail with that deep of a break, I would consider gluing on a press on type nail if the patch doesn't hold.

  5. I've been breaking the heck out of my nails. I tried to rescue them but two of the three I broke are gone. I just want to get the third grown out long enough to pass my nail bed. I hate when they get so long and start breaking! Hopefully you will be able to save yours.

  6. Well, I have to go against the rest here, and say CHOP IT OFF! Hehe. ;)

I think shorter nails look much better, and think of all the lovely vampies you could rock with nubbies! :D

(Or maybe I'm just jealous because my nails never grow long, haha.) ;)

  7. CHOCADDICT - I am a klutz too! Thus the break I suppose LOL, but I've been surprised I can still do most things like typing pretty normally with long nails.

PAINTEDLADYFINGERS - I had almost come to terms with losing it & then suprised myself when the patch held. I hope it holds for at least a few weeks.

    PINKGINGER - thanks =)

TEE - About time you left a comment, as often as your nails show up on here =) You just need to bite the bullet & learn how to patch your own nails so you don't have to depend on me =P

    NICOLE - I've got my finger's crossed!

SOLVEIG - LMAO! I do admit I have a little teeny tiny impulse to cut them all down & not have to worry about mainatining a patch on it.

  8. I've never tried to patch a nail. I just chop them off. Maybe it's because my nails never get that long. My nails on my left hand are getting longer. I broke one on my right and both thumbs are short. Hope you can save yours. You have beautiful nails.

  10. Oh no Colette. I did it to my thumb nail two days ago. It was just a little tear, patched it up, and then today got a huge rip like yours, and I threw caution to the wind and cut mine down! Hope yours holds on.x
