So, I thought I should do a Valentine's Day water marble (a couple days ago ... this was Tuesday's NOTD). I'm pretty happy with the way the design turned out, but I really was not loving the pink on me. Really not sure why but it bugged me a little bit all day.
I usually - but not always - stick with the same brand for all colors of a water marble. It's not that different brands don't work together, more that when you stick to the same brand, they're more likely to have the same consistency, and therefore a more even spread .. but even then that's not always true. The 2 main rules to great water marbles: Practice & Experiment.
For my base color I used Sally Hansen Petite Pink, then I marbled with that & Sally Hanson Beet Stain & Sally Hanson Tassel:
It was late when I finished this & apparently I forgot to take pics like I usually do when I finish under the natural lamp, so sorry about that ... but hopefully you'll forgive me since I did do a tutorial =) When I polled if people would like to see more water marbles with different colors, or only new designs, the results were evenly split 50/50 ... so I guess half of you maybe don't care about this but for the rest, here you go:

Colette, this is so gorgeous, my mouth fell open when I saw it! I really need to try this. Have you tried making a heart design by drawing the orange stick through the bullseye once down the middle? I'm not sure if that's possible or how it would turn out, but I'd be interested to see you try it. BTW, did you see all the new Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear colors on their website? Michelle

Hi, my name is Heather and I have been a nail tech for over ten years. I came across this technique and was brown away. I love it.!!! I am going to try this right away. Thank you for sharing. Two questions. Have you done just the tip of the nail and can you do more then one finger at a time? Haven't come across any examples of this yet. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteANON - Thanks! I haven't done it myself, but you can do just the tip by taping off the bed of your nail & just leaving the end open. I usually do just 1 so I get the best part of the design, but some are suitable for 2 fingers & I've done as many as 3, which is as many will fit in my cup =)

ReplyDeleteANON - just scotch tape - an orange stick is a wooden manicure tool, basically a long pointy stick like a big toothpick – you can use anything with a fine point =)
ANON - you can use any brand of polish, but not every color works =)
ANNA - it's just room temperature filtered water
ANON - I've never tried it on fake nails but the result should be the same =)

ReplyDeleteCYNTHIA - finding the right polish is all trial & error - also are you using room temperature filtered water?
ReplyDeleteis it really needed to used filterd water???can we use the simple water,no the filterd one?
ReplyDeleteANON - I always use room temperature filtered water from a Brita pitcher because most tap water is too hard & the polish will not spread as well. Bottled is also usually OK as long as there are no additives. You can check out my water comparison under the Tips & Tricks playlist to see the difference =)

Love this technique but I am getting very frustrated! I can get everything right apart from transferring the design onto the nail. Every time I put my nail in and remove the excess but when I lift the nail from the water it just looks a big gloopy mess! Do you have any advice which may prevent this?

ReplyDeleteI love your blogs, I have been trying the marble look and I love it, I just have one suggestion. Let everyone know not to work in an area that has air blowing on the cup, such as the AC (air conditioner) or heat. Because it dries the polish very quickly and makes it difficult to draw the orange stick through the polish and you end up wasting a lot of polish. It is just a suggestion.
