NOTDs: Neon Overload (TWO China Glaze Poolside Collection Rainbow Water Marbles + Tutorials!)

In the end, I really liked both of these, and I feel like they give very different vibes even though they are the same colors.  The first gives more interesting contrast, with the transition from blue back to pink, but I had some issues with bubbles & really wasn't too happy with the tutorial although I did upload it & maybe you guys can have a few laughs, heh.  It doesn't exactly suck, I just felt kind of fumbly & mushy-mumble-mouthed.  The second, even though it's a more traditional ROYGBIV spectrum (if without the IV) it honestly puts me in mind more of a tie-dye than a real rainbow =).  I had much less bubbling for whatever reason - water marbling baffles even me occasionally - and I feel like the tutorial is much better.  Anyway, for all that they're very similar, and since I didn't get the first one up last night I decided to post them together.

I got SOOO many compliments on both of these.  Even though I've got something crazy on my nails a lot of the time, I think these have really been catching people's eye because they are so BRIGHT.  I am not including any flash shots for either version because they just all came out like crap, the flash totally washed out all the colors.

This first one was my NOTD on Wednesday & Thursday.  I used the entire Poolside collection:  Pool Party, Flip Flop Fantasy, Sun Worshipper, Towel Boy Toy, Kiwi Cool-Ada &Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.  I liked the blue & green best so chose to put those closer to the cuticle so they could show up more.  My favorite nails were both pinkies & my left ring, even though it didn't pick up any orange:

I'm sure I don't need to tell you all how difficult neons are to photograph.  But these are truly neon, the exact same shade as highlighters - and I have the proof!  I snapped this at work:

Here is the first tutorial:

OK, the second version was my NOTD on Friday & I've still got it on today.  I may wear it all weekend =)  Same 6 colors, but this time I really wanted to do a traditional rainbow order, starting pink at the cuticle & progressing through orange, yellow, green to blue.  I kind of wish this collection had also included a true purple neon, maybe instead of the kind of coral-pink one.  As I said above, this really reminds me of a tie-dye.  I wish I'd gotten more "petals" overall on my right hand, but my favorite nails are my left middle & thumb:

Here's the second tutorial:

Well, that's everything =)  I hope you enjoyed your neon fix for the day LOL.  Thanks for reading.

  2. Completely awesome! I did a neon water marble a while back (not Poolside, as I didn't have the collection at the time) and got tons of compliments. I feel like the brightness, plus the fact that water marbles are so unique, make it very attention grabbing.

  26. I adore these marbles. The Poolside Collection is amazing anyway, but this is just fantastic. I tried a neon marble before, but it sucked badly (mostly because Flying Dragon is glittery and just looked funky). But now that I I have these, a second try seems to be necessary.

  39. Your work is absolutely AMAZING! I earned my license as a Manicurist in the state of Missouri in 2004 but only worked in the field for 4 months before giving up. :( Nails have always been my passion and a wonderful hobby - I just never found a mentor or anyone who could really 'show me the ropes.' At school I learned all the book stuff, but the practicality of it all - nope. I hope someday to go back into the field since I do enjoy it so very much. I keep my license current for sure!

Inspired by your vids I attempted the Water Marble Technique and I'm rather pleased with my first attempt. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your talents with the world!!

    YOU ROCK!!

  41. Help! I tried to marble with the Poolside Collection and it failed miserably. The polish hardened so fast on the water surface and wouldn't spread. =(

  47. Hello,
I have a question for you. Wich water do you use when you marble your nails.. they are very beautiful. We tried differents kinds of waters for example tab water, cooked water and bottled water, all room temperatured.
What is it that we are doing wrong, because if we drop some nailpolish in the water then it doesn't spread that much....like in a big circle..
    Help us please!!
    Thank u very much

  51. You are the best! I love bright neon colours to look at but not to wear on my nails. However this I would wear! Tempted to go buy some neons just to be able to try this. Usually I am all about glitter and sparkle but I have to say this is now my #1 favourite water marble. Keep up the magic and thank you for sharing!!!

  52. You are so good at doing your nails :) The colors in the Natural Sunlight look beautiful! I'm going to try this! Hopefully I won't fail :p

  53. OMGGGGGGG your nails look AMAZING!! I stumbled upon this nail technique online yesterday & I was like, "Omgggg I HAVE to try this!" I attempted to do it, but the polish kept drying too quickly in the water. I think my water was @ room temp, but I'm not sure if the water I used has anything to do with it. Anyways, I plan to buy some more polish & continue experimenting!! :D

  54. I need help!! I've tried different effects on my nails, and can't get the bullseye effect. I've used filtered, tap, and sparkling water, I've used room temp water, and when it felt too cold, I took a little of the chill off, I've used inexpensive polish, semi expensive polish, expensive polish, I've held the brush an inch above the water, I've held the brush at water level. WHEN I get the bullseye, it's because the first color I drip moves fast to the side of the bowl, leaving a film so light you can't see the color. When I drip other colors in it, they do make the bullseye, but then I cant make a design in the polish because of the film. IF the first dripped color does spread, it's only to the size of a quarter or a half dollar, so then I get frustrated, just drip polish anywhere, and try to make a design. What am I doing wrong that a bullseye won't form?

    ReplyDelete
  55. For the marble nails, any kind of design,
do you paint your nails before you dip them?

I've been wanting to try this and i just don't know cause you have never explained how to prep your nails before.

    let me know, please!
    thanks:D

  56. ANON - with the skin/film, it sounds like the polish is starting to dry - you either have to work faster or find colors that dry slower =)

ANON - it’s not required, but I always recommend a base coat to help it stick to you nail & also a base color because it helps the marble colors be more opaque & vibrant =)
